Behind every foundation, there lies a history. Some histories are somber, whereas some are very interesting. Jaina has an enthralling story.

Mr. Surajit Bose, the mastermind, behind Jaina, was ambitioned to be a flyer of airplanes. Trained in US, he got his license to fly. He was about to set his career when the entire aviation industry went for a toss after the tragic 9/11 happened. Dreams were slipping out just as sand from between his fingers. He had a friend called Rupen Shah, who was a nuclear biologist in Florida. In such adverse conditions, as a means of sustenance, Rupen suggested him to start helping a subway store in Long Island, New York. The owners of the store, Mr. Viren Mehta and his brother-in-law Mr. Mahendra Bhai Shah, were known to Rupen.

Mahendra Bhai spoke a different language. He could not even pronounce Surajit’s pet name. Instead, he called him “Tony”. There was neither a kinship, nor a common language. All that existed was humanity, faith and optimism. He always used to inspire Surajit saying, “Good things happen to good people”, adhering to his strong belief that he was not born to serve a subway store. He should go for big things; things that would serve the mankind. Mahendra Bhai had the insight to distinguish diamond from rhinestone.

No one knew what waited round the corner. One day, while glancing through the pages of the magazine, “Young Entrepreneur”, he cited the advertisement that said:”Call India for 2 cents”. At that time call to India was at 50 cents a minute. Straightaway he told about the same to Mahendra Bhai and borrowed $600 to visit that company in San Francisco to know more about it.

Surajit met Brian Blerevom, the representative of the company. Though he had no technical know-how related to telecommunication he tried to absorb everything that Brian explained to him about the equipment, media gateway, gatekeepers, routing modules and billing engines. Without wasting time, he flew back to NY and articulated the idea to Mahendra Bhai to start a company. Not-much-confident Mahendra Bhai agreed to invest only out of a blind faith on the young enthusiast. The first name that Surajit came upon was “Research Engineers”. But since neither Surajit nor Mahendra Bhai was an engineer, this name was rejected by the NYS. Mahendra Bhai was struck by the name “Jaina” that rooted from “Jain”, as he was a follower of Jainism. Since system and networking were the main aspects, “JAINA SYSTEMS NETWORK INC.” was finalized as the name of the brainchild of Surajit.

After much thought and reasoning, an amount of USD 22,000 was to be decided upon as the initial investment to purchase the equipment that neither Mahendra Bhai nor Surajit was confident of. But the latter was desperate to declare that, if this amount was not returned to Mahendra Bhai then he would serve the subway store without claiming any remuneration for the rest of his life. There was no more questioning.

The first set of equipments was:
1. Two Quintum D3000 E1/T1 Gateways (Total that can handle 60 simultaneous calls)
2. Quintum Tenor CallRelay (That can handle 60 simultaneous calls)
3. Sysmaster Radius Billing Server.

Surajit was joined by Mr. Frank Vella who used to visit the store, regularly for his morning tea. The first technician who joined the company to support trans-Atlantic communication was Alex Martinez. A small portion of the garage adjacent to the store was used as the office and to host the equipment. Surajit had yet to understand ample of things about carrier hotels and MMA. Alex gave some ideas about how to set up the equipment but to Surajit, it was beyond his apprehension. By that time pressure started building up on him. All he had was a strong determination and the endurance to put up in the adjacent garage space. He used to sleep amongst empty beer and soda cans as he had no money to rent a room for himself or the equipments. Throughout the struggle, Mr. Vella emerged as a father figure to Surajit, nurturing his aspirations. Dinner cooked by Mr. Vella and sandwiches from the store, were his food for thought.

Gradually Jaina family became larger with shareholders flowing in and today it has different departments ably working in co-ordination to make every operation a success.
